Makko and the Ancient Art of Incense Appreciation

Part 1 - Makko
What is makko?  Makko aka Tabu -no- ki is the bark of an evergreen tree which acts as a 100% natural and organic binder and combustible base used in making incense and also in trail or sonae-koh burning, it is also a superior base for burning resin incenses which provides slower, cooler and more controlled combustion than the charcoals commonly used.  Using makko in a trail can provide hours of slow, gentle fragrance.  The photos below illustrate the process of preparing the makko trail as it has been used for centuries by Buddhist practitioners.  Traditional aromatics like sandalwood, aloeswood, clove, cinnamon, etc. have been burned upon makko for meditation, religious ceremony, relaxation and for aromatherapeutic or medicinal properties.   Resins and resin blends also work very well when sprinkled lightly atop the trail.

Makko Step 1

Makko Step 1

-
Fill bowl or censer with ash and tap bottom
lightly on table to settle ash.

Makko Step 2

Makko Step 2

-
Press koh stamp lightly into ash to
form an impression.
Then, tap bowl lightly on table to
settle ash around the press.
Makko Step 3
Step 3 - Remove stamp and carefully fill impression
with makko powder to make a base for your trail.
Sandalwood powder also works as a base or by itself.
Pure aloeswood powder may also be used as a trail
by itself to experience aloeswood without anything
added to detract from the aroma.
Makko Step 4
Step 4 - Press your trail lightly with
the koh stamp to pack it.
Step 4
Step 5 - Remove koh stamp.
The following steps must be performed
with Caution by an adult.

Step 6
Step 6 - Break a small piece of Japanese incense
about 1" long.  Light the incense and carefully
place the burning tip at an angle into the corner
of the trail.  For best results bend the tip of the
incense a little by pressing gently
into the side of the bowl while it is burning,
Then, place the bent tip into the ash.
This may take a few tries to get the technique.
If you accidentally extinguish the
incense before the trail ignites try again.
You should quickly develop the touch.
Caution - Burning fingertips do not smell or feel good.
Makko Step 7
Step 7 - Once the makko is burning, incense blends,
resins, wood chips or powders can be sprinkled on top.

granulated incense mixture.)
