Fill
bowl or censer with ash and tap lightly to settle
ash. Be careful not to break bowl. |
Makko Step 2
-
Press
koh stamp lightly into ash to
form an impression,
and tap bowl lightly
to settle ash
around the press. |
Step 3 -
Remove stamp and carefully fill impression with makko powder. |
Step 4 -
Press
makko lightly with the
koh stamp to pack the trail. |
Step 5 -
Remove koh stamp.

Step 6 - Break
a small piece of Japanese incense -
about 1" long.
Light the incense and carefully
place the burning tip at an angle into
the corner
of the makko trail. For best results bend the tip of the incense
a little by pressing gently
into the side of the bowl while it is burning,
Then, place the bent tip into the ash.
This may take a few tries to get
the technique. If you accidentally extinguish the
incense before
the makko ignites try again.
You should quickly develop the touch.

Step 7 - Once
the makko is burning, incense blends,
resins, wood chips
or powders can be sprinkled on top.
Picture shows a burning trail partially loaded with
granulated incense
mixture. The trail is not completely
covered since I haven't
decided what I want to smell next.
Sandalwood chips will do nicely right now, I think.
